§ 18-27. Powers and duties.

  • In order to effectuate these purposes, the commission on human relations and disabilities issues shall have the following duties and shall receive support from the general government fund:

    (1)

    Advise the unified government board of commissioners on problems affecting the human and intergroup relations;

    (2)

    Advise as to projects, programs, and activities related to people with disabilities;

    (3)

    Recommend to the unified government board of commissioners such measures as the commission feels necessary to carry out its objectives;

    (4)

    Make studies, surveys and investigations to provide data as needed in its work;

    (5)

    Mediate disputes voluntarily referred to it in order to minimize or eliminate prejudice, intolerance, bigotry, disorder or discrimination and in order to promote good will in the community;

    (6)

    Consult and cooperate with federal, state and unified government agencies, both public and private;

    (7)

    Develop, formulate and promote educational programs designed to stimulate the interest and understanding of the entire population in the objectives of the commission;

    (8)

    Develop and demonstrate new approaches, techniques, and methods, provide technical assistance to the county administrator in the development and implementation of plans and programs to comply with requirements of local, state, and federal legislation respecting the disabled, and assist in the coordination of community and governmental services to people with disabilities;

    (9)

    Provide informational and referral services for people with disabilities and their families;

    (10)

    Report to the unified government board of commissioners about its programs, projects, and activities and recommend means of eliminating any unfair or unjust discrimination toward any person or group that would be deemed detrimental to the best interest of the community;

    (11)

    Create such advisory committees as will aid the community in effectuating its objectives.
