§ 28-43. Commissioning of officers; composition; qualifications; duties.

  • (a)

    Applicants for appointment to the police reserve unit must meet the same qualification and requirements as the applicants for the regular police department, with the exception of age. Applicants are required to be residents of the city at the time they are appointed to the police reserve unit. Members of the police reserve unit shall consist of persons who are a minimum of 21 years of age who are in good mental and physical conditions as evidenced by a physical and psychiatric examination. Maximum age requirements shall be set by the chief of police in department regulations.

    (b)

    At such time as the applicant for the police reserve applicant shall have complied with all qualifications and completed all other requirements for training for commission, as established by the rules and regulations of the police department, the applicant shall be granted a commission by the unified government board of commissioners as a reserve police officer. The commission shall vest in the reserve officer the authority of a sworn police officer of the city while on duty and serving under the regulations of the city police department.

    (c)

    Reserve police officers will be assigned for duty to various elements of the police department in accordance with demonstrated need. Assignments to meet such need shall be determined by the chief of police or his designee. Permission to performs duties for private persons may be granted upon proper application and approval being made by the chief of police or the chief's designate officer.
