§ 2-593. Composition.

  • (a)

    The juvenile corrections advisory board shall be composed of 16 members appointed as follows:

    (1)

    Six members shall assume positions on the board pursuant to the statutory requirements of K.S.A. 75-7044 and amendments thereto as follows:

    a.

    The sheriff or the sheriff's designated representative;

    b.

    The chief of police of the city or the chief of police's designated representative;

    c.

    The district attorney or the district attorney's designated representative;

    d.

    A district court judge assigned to the juvenile court docket appointed by the administrative judge of the 29th Judicial District;

    e.

    A court services officer designated by the administrative judge of the 29th Judicial District; and

    f.

    The executive director of the Wyandot Center for Behavioral Healthcare or such director's designated representative.

    (2)

    To comply with the statutory requirement to appoint an education representative, the Kansas City, Kansas, Turner, and Piper School Districts (USD 500; USD 202; and USD 203) shall each be invited to designate a representative to the board. If any school district fails to designate such representative, the unified government board of commissioners may appoint a representative to fill such position.

    (3)

    The City of Bonner Springs shall be invited to designate a representative to the board. If the city fails to designate such representative, the unified government board of commissioners may appoint a representative to fill such position.

    (4)

    The regional director of the state department of social and rehabilitation services shall be invited to be a member of the board or to designate a representative to the board.

    (5)

    The director of the unified government community corrections department or his or her designated representative shall be a member of the board.

    (6)

    The mayor or a unified government commissioner appointed by the mayor shall be a member of the board.

    (7)

    As the governing body for the only first-class city in the county and as the governing body for the county, the unified government board of commissioners shall appoint three members to the board.

    a.

    According to K.S.A. 75-7044 and amendments thereto, if possible, such members shall be representative of one or more of the following:

    1.

    Public or private social service agencies;

    2.

    Ex-offenders;

    3.

    The health care professions; and

    4.

    The general public.

    b.

    In addition to the above-listed statutory categories, one of the appointments shall be representative of the faith community.

    c.

    Unified government staff shall recommend individuals to the unified government board of commissioners for such appointments.

    (b)

    At least two members of the board shall be representative of ethnic minorities and no more than two-thirds of the members of the board shall be members of the same gender.
