§ 7-51. Adoption of animals.

  • An animal held at the animal shelter for three working days and not redeemed by its owner, or five working days if the animal is found with tags which identify its owner, and which is neither vicious nor in a dangerous condition of health may be released for adoption or transfer to a Kansas licensed animal shelter or rescue organization, subject to the following conditions:

    (1)

    The adoptive owner shall agree in writing to furnish proper care to the animal in accordance with this chapter.

    (2)

    In the case of an animal capable of sexual reproduction, such person shall deposit a prepaid neutering or spaying fee as established by the county administrator redeemable for neutering or spaying of the animal at any local veterinary clinic with a current cooperative agreement with the unified government for such services. As an alternative to the prepaid neutering or spaying fee, the adoptive owner may make a deposit equal to the prepaid neutering or spaying fee, refundable upon furnishing evidence that such animal has been rendered sexually unreproductive by any veterinarian of the adoptive owner's choice.
