§ 31-6. Trash containers.

  • (a)

    Trash, other than ashes, shall be stored in durable, rust-resistant, nonabsorbent, watertight containers, which shall have close-fitting covers and adequate handles or bails to facilitate collection, and which shall be of not more than 50 gallons in capacity and 75 pounds in weight, when full, for households, except that bulky rubbish may be stored in bundles, securely tied, not exceeding 75 pounds in weight, four feet in length, and 18 inches in diameter, and that compact articles of not less than ten pounds nor more than 75 pounds need not be placed in a container or bundle. Business establishments shall provide the same storage, except that larger containers may be permitted upon application to the health officer.

    (b)

    Notwithstanding subsection (a) of this section, trash other than ashes may be placed in plastic bags provided:

    (1)

    The capacity of the bag is not more than 50 gallons; and

    (2)

    The weight of the bag when full does not exceed 75 pounds.

    (c)

    Ashes shall be stored in fire-resistant, durable, nonabsorbent, watertight containers with close-fitting covers. Such containers shall be equipped with adequate handles to facilitate collection, shall be not greater than 50 gallons in capacity and 75 pounds in weight when full, unless otherwise permitted upon application to the health officer. Ashes containing hot embers shall not be placed in containers for collection.

    (d)

    It shall be unlawful to permit trash, except bulky trash, to accumulate on any premises except in containers that are approved by the health officer in accordance with the specifications contained in this section.
